Another MhZ International Mystery classic and I am told they are in production creating more shows for us that we should stay tuned for (according to MhZ news). Luca Zingaretti is the Italian Maigret and Sherlock Holmes. The relationship he has with his team is hilarious but serious. All the stereotypical Italian nuances you might have learned about in America are born and bred here and are obviously authentic. The funniest person on the show is the clerk, his name starts with a C, Campellini or something like that. He is an Italian Kramer (Seinfeld).

The Omerta trilogy is the best series I have ever seen on television. It centers around the RCMP's attempts to take down the head of the Montreal mafia. It is hard-hitting, violent, realistic, and incredibly intense. It is one of the rare shows where I had to keep watching each episode in the DVD set one after the other, hoping I could keep fitting one more in before I had to go to bed.
There are 3 stories in the Omerta series; Omerta 1, 2, and 3. Omerta 1 and 2 are sequential in terms of the story, and should be watched in order. Omerta 3 introduces a new character, and follows his rise in the mafia. What is interesting is that the time-line in Omerta 3 covers both before and after the action in the first two, characters which had been killed off earlier can make appearances without causing plot holes. It was an effective way of creating a full series using many of the same actors.

Candian French language series

Fortier is an extremely engrossing French Canadian police series. The setting is a Montreal police unit who specialize in dealing with "psychiatric" cases. The premise gives the unit a wide range of crimes to deal with, needless to say that they don't deal with run of the mill crime. The acting by the regular cast is top notch and you can feel the how quickly they felt at ease with each other. I must mention that the acting by the various guess stars is first rate. Essentially so since the credibility of many of the episodes rely on their performance. The scripts are solid and subtle and the story is repleted with surprises without being overly gimmicky. There is an overall storyline or should I say mystery that involves the titular character of Anne Fortier that is slowly being developed through out the season and is unresolved as of the end of season one. This is balanced out by mini arc stories that last two episodes. The series is well plotted and populated by interesting and complex characters. Overall highly recommended.

The Millennium series is a series of bestselling novels originally written in Swedish by the late Stieg Larsson. The novels in the series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, were first published in 2005, 2006 and 2007 respectively.
Larsson, who was disgusted by sexual violence, witnessed the gang rape of a young girl when he was 15. The author never forgave himself for failing to help the girl, whose name was Lisbeth – like the young heroine of his books, herself a rape victim, which inspired the theme of sexual violence against women in his books.[1]
The primary characters in the series are Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist. Lisbeth is an intelligent, eccentric woman in her twenties with a photographic memory and poor social skills. Blomkvist is an investigative journalist with a history similar to Larsson's.

The Van Veeteren detective series is based on the best-selling crime novels by one of Sweden's most popular mystery writers, Håkan Nesser. Set in the fictitious city of Maardam, in a made-up country that could be anywhere in northern Europe, the series follows the murder cases of retired chief inspector, Van Veeteren, and his two crime squad protégés, Münster and Moreno.
The series starts with Van Veeteren going into retirement. A beautiful small town full of psychopathic mass killers, brought to justice by a grumpy middle aged detective - no, it's not 'Inspector Morse', but 'Wallander', the British programme's Swedish equivalent. And whereas in every Morse story, the lead detective fell for a woman who turned out to be involved in the murders, here (on the evidence of the two stories recently shown on British television) every murder in some way involves Wallender's daughter. The plotting may be overblown, but the tone of these adaptations is procedural, and the characters generally show the famed Scandinavian sense of reserve; this makes Wallender appear less obviously interesting than Morse, but with skilled direction, the nasty stuff appears genuinely creepy. It's the chilling sense of atmosphere that makes the program a winner, in my book, rather than the stories; so it will be interesting to see how the recent BBC adaptation of the same novels compares.
